About JAFCI

The Jonathan Amy Facility for Chemical Instrumentation (JAFCI) provides support services to the research staff in the Department of Chemistry. This assistance includes repair of electronic instrumentation, design of specialized circuits for research applications, and consulting services to faculty and graduate students. The staff are able to deal with all hardware, software and interface problems in data path of modern laboratory instrumentation. A request for service by the facility is initiated with a service request form.

The staff includes 14 members with a wide variety of professional skills. The professional staff comprises five members with advanced degrees in the physical sciences. The technical staff have college level qualifications in electronic engineering technology. The staff is engaged in a continuous process of retraining to master new technologies.

The facility also provides specialized services in support of departmental networking and microcomputer operations. There is a precision machine shop attached to the facility. This shop is used for the design and non-routine fabrication of high precision laboratory apparatus. Support of the departmental NMR spectrometers is provided through the facility.

There are no service charges to people within the Department of Chemistry. Repair and construction parts are billed at cost. (Any work that is presented from outside the Department is evaluated on a case by case basis.) The operating philosophy of the facility includes a commitment to distribute its efforts equitably in all areas of departmental research and teaching activities as guided by the faculty. All projects and repairs are completed on a first come first served basis. The facility's policy is reviewed by a Faculty Advisory Committee on a continuing basis.
